Vacation Part 2: Wilmington/Visiting Aunt Heather H

We spent 5 full days in Wilmington with Aunt Heather H.  We had a really good visit and enjoyed some of my late nights drinking wine with Heather.  Since Caedmon is still under a year old I was really glad we didn't go somewhere new because we didn't get to do a whole lot.  So it was good that we have been there 3 times before.  We only went to the ocean once which was a little disappointing but oh well.  This was Caedmon's first time at the ocean and he didn't like it.  We are guessing it was the sound of the waves were too loud because he did not want you to set him down in the sand for the waves to wash up on his feet.  He didn't want to be anywhere near the water.  He didn't mind the sand on the beach away from the water.  He had fun playing in the sand.

Other things we did were went to the aquarium and Caedmon liked the fishies.  We took a 30 minute ferry ride over to Southport, NC.  The ferry ride is where the car goes with you on the boat.  I have never done anything like that before so I thought it was pretty cool.  At Southport we walked around a little bit, fed some sea gulls, and went to a winery.  Met some fun people at the winery.

Tanner and I were able to have a date night one night and Aunt Heather watched Caedmon.  We went to Front Street Brewery and had an appetizer and a beer.  Then walked by the river for a bit and then went to dinner at a nice restaurant called Caprice Bistro.  Again more amazing food.  I particularly liked the carrot soup there and Tanner got escargot for the first time and loved it.  Me on the other hand I will pass on that.  Pretty much every restaurant we ate at had really good food.

The last night in Wilmington we went to a really good friends of Heathers house for a cookout.  They have an almost 2 year old daughter.  Both her and Caedmon were entertaining.  We ended off the night playing charades.

So overall the trip was nice.  This is the last time we will probably be in Wilmington since Taylor and Heather will not be there anymore after December.  I already talked about the drive home in an earlier post.  The drive to Asheville and Wilmington went really well.  The iPad is what we think saved the drive from being a complete nightmare.

Vacation Part 1: Asheville/Stupid Biltmore

So the first part of vacation was stopping in Asheville, North Carolina and staying a day there.  As I said in an earlier post we planned to go to the Biltmore Estate again.  Well since the last time we were there they had made some changes.  When you enter the property you drive about a mile or 2 into it and then you have to turn and park by this new building that was built.  At this building you have to purchase tickets in order to proceed to the house and winery, etc.  Well they were charging $60 a person to tour the house and winery!  I can understand them at that price but we did not want to take the tours.  We have already done the tours and we did not want to spend $120 if Caedmon decides to be a pain in the ass and we have to leave before we are finished.  We just wanted to go to the winery and the new shops they have there now and just walk around and look at the pretty grounds and maybe have some lunch.  What I don't understand is why they can't charge like say $20 to $25 to just get on the grounds with no tours.  So that pissed us off.  F U Biltmore!

So instead we went to Asheville Brewing Company and had some beers and good food.  We actually had a really good time there and had nice conversation with our waiter.  And Caedmon was really good the whole time we were there.  I had an awesome quesadilla and Tanner had an awesome burger.  And then we went to the Asheville Arboretum and saw nice gardens there.  Basically did things that we were going to do at Biltmore.  Saw gardens and went to grocery store and picked up some Biltmore wine.

I will end with one thing funny I said at the Arboretum.  They had an education center there and Tanner asks want to go look around in the education center?  I said no I don't want to be educated.  Ha!

iPad was a life saver
